Success and Mediocrity

Why are so many successful people mediocre? What is it for them that compensates for pure, undiluted mastery on the subject?

I am talking of success purely in terms of monetary gains, and public esteem.

Thats because they have other skills that 'smart' people dont. They are political, and they know how to manipulate people, and they know how to smooth talk etc. You will find that the smartest people are socially inept. Success in the world in monetray terms comes from making other dumb people feel good about themselves. Of course, nobody feels good about themselves talking to Einstein. I do hate that about this world, though.

--> Well, mastery in a subject doesn't always translate to success. If that were the case, the most successful people in the world would all have Ph.Ds as a least common denominator. Probably success is more about how the knowledge is put to use for a higher purpose as opposed to acquiring knowledge and mastery as a pure intellectual exercise. Take Google for example, it all started with a thesis project, the project itself isn't that stellar or mind-boggling and Sergey Brin and Larry Page aren't exactly geniuses (they do have Ph.Ds though), I have seen Sergey Brin speak and he speaks like a moron. However, what made them successful is the way they synch'ed with people with their simple web interface and how they saw "search" differently.
